We wanted Incognito mosquito repellent to be good. We hoped it was as effective as the marketing literature and as superb as its enthusiastic reviews. So off we went to Koh Samui – a group of three – armed with one 100ml bottle of Incognito Natural Anti-Mozzie DEET-Free Insect Repellent, and high hopes. Result? There’s a mosquito-free world out there, with no chemical consequences, and you need to know about it. It’s game-changing.

Incognito mosquito repellent review
Background: Why we’re scared of DEET
On our first holiday to the tropics, we did as told and packed strong DEET mosquito repellent. This was before the recent proliferation of natural and green product alternatives. We didn’t know quite what toxicity we’d invited along. Day 1, a family member applied some of the DEET spray to her feet. Soon the chemical concoction melted her black rubber flip-flops and left black marks on the soles of her feet for weeks.
The rest of us fared better – it just bleached all our clothes.
Suitably horrified, we never touched another DEET product and have long since used only natural mosquito repellents to avoid mosquitoes in Thailand. This preference and an online shopping habit led us to Incognito mosquito repellent – totally natural and totally ethical (equally good news for babies and bunnies!)
Enter Incognito mosquito repellent
Does it work? Yes, yes, yes – a billion times yes. Extremely – insanely – high efficacy. Our three days on Koh Samui were extremely hot, humid and totally without a breeze; prime mosquito conditions. With success like we’ve never known, none of us had a single mosquito bite our entire trip. History was made: Not a single mosquito bite. Total astonishment – two of us are known mosquito magnets. Neither of us has ever escaped Samui unscathed after twelve years of regular visits. We couldn’t believe it.
Smell? Very pleasant and not at all ‘chemically’. Unlike straight citronella, it’s not acrid. We two women really liked it, while our ‘Guinea Pig-Man’ didn’t notice any smell at all.
Total Incognito love As the week wore on we became rabid obsessives – our love for Incognito became a dinner topic of itself. Such was our amazement, we looked up what else we could love from their product line…
Exfoliation station: Next time, we’ll also be packing another sure success in the Incognito range – anti-mosquito loofah soap. Apparently regular exfoliation is a great trick to avoiding mosquitoes, especially in such sticky (sweaty) climates as Thailand.
Even more mosquito war: A further range of options including citronella incense sticks and hair/body wash all come just as highly reviewed – we’re going to become evangelising product devotees.
Update! Incognito four years later
We’ve now been using Incognito for over four years and remain just in love with it as on our first test trip. We’ve now incorporated their entire line of products into our lives. A few new discoveries:
1. Love the loofah
The luxury loofah soap is equally fantastic. Apparently, mosquitoes love the chemical combos found near dead skin cells, so exfoliating is upper-level genius. The loofah contains a bar of mosquito-repelling natural soap, which we found lasted about two weeks with daily use. The loofah as a stand-alone item (to which Alex adds regular body wash) is still as good as new after 3+ months and counting. It’s a terrifically quality piece of construction – and it’s made in Thailand.
2. Some surprise uses
As for the Incognito spray, turns out, it really does repel all insects (not just mosquitoes)… just like it says on the bottle. If you ever find a meal or cup of coffee receiving the unwanted attention of house flies, we’ve found that dabbing a little Incognito on the base of the cup (or an edge of your plate that food isn’t touching) makes them depart with pleasing haste.
Our incognito method and FAQs
1. Religious dedication
For certain head to toe coverage, we each liberally dosed up after towelling off from the shower. Confident in its chemical-free healthiness, we were happy spraying Incognito on our shoulders and neck. Then, it went in a pocket or handbag to spend the day with us – typically topping up when we stopped for lunch, afternoon drinks and dinner. Mosquitoes just didn’t feature in our holiday.
2. Expert tips
The Incognito website also offers some great beginner science and tips for mosquito warfare. For example, we learned why two of the three of us were historically popular with mosquitoes. Women have thinner skin and our veins are closer to the surface – we’re tastier. We also learned how to apply mosquito repellent – tips which probably increased our success.
How long does one 100ml bottle last?
Sharing a bottle between 2 people, it lasted about 10 days. As the bottle started to feel lighter we began to panic – we didn’t want to live without it. Incognito offer a 3-pack of 100ml bottles which would be ideal for a longer trip for one or two people, or for a week’s family holiday. We’ll definitely be stocking our toiletry bags and home cupboards with bottles (and back-up bottles).

Ready to kiss the DEET goodbye?
It’s always exciting when the good guys triumph: no mosquito bites, no scary chemicals, no bunny testing – finally the healthiest and most ethical choice is the most effective by a wide mile. This is a science project that definitely calls for celebratory sunset drinks – with bare ankles.
